National Media Leadership Conference on Democracy and Electoral Reform November 2010
The National Media Leadership Conference on Democracy and Electoral Reform, organised by DRI’s partner Intermedia in Karachi, was attended by senior representatives of state and private media. The conference focused on forging consensus within the media community on improving coverage of electoral issues. On this occasion, DRI shared with participants the conclusions of the EU EOM 2008 and provided more information about DRI’s work in Pakistan, while Intermedia led sessions on its baseline study of local media coverage of elections in all provinces and how to improve coverage. Participants signed a joint declaration on improved coverage of local government elections.
Meeting with President Zardari, November 2010
Representatives of the EU Delegation and DRI met with President Zardari, in his capacity as PPP leader, to solicit his support for a stronger parliamentary mechanism to address electoral reform in Pakistan.
Iccpr Orientation, October 2010
Together with the Research Society for International Law (RSIL), Democracy Reporting International hosted on 2 October an orientation session for senior officials from the federal and provincial governments, assemblies and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and its implications for developing new legislation for local government elections. Participants included representatives of the federal government, the provincial governments, the Election Commission of Pakistan, members of provincial assemblies, civil society organizations and academia.
Forum on Local Elections, July/ August 2010
Democracy Reporting International hosted a forum from 30 July to 1 August at Bhurban to enhance inter and intra-provincial coordination on the local elections. The forum was attended by provincial legislators, provincial election commissioners, provincial local government departments, civil society activists, such as FAFEN and international experts from IFES.
Office Opening, June 2010
Democracy Reporting International formally opened its Islamabad office in early June. The opening event was attended by senior Parliamentarians, diplomats, key civil society partners, journalists and others.
Baseline Study of Media and Elections, April 2010
Through its Pakistani partner organisation Intermedia, Democracy Reporting International conducted a baseline study of media reporting on the electoral reform process and elections in all four provinces. The study was designed to assess the level and quality of election-related reporting and to identify gaps in thematic expertise. At subsequent dialogue sessions with media representatives, the results of the study were presented and discussed.
High Level Event on Parliament and Electoral Reform, April 2010
The European Union Delegation to Pakistan and Democracy Reporting International hosted a high level event on the 12 April to introduce the programme and facilitate discussion amongst leaders of parliamentary parties represented in the National Assembly and the Senate about the most appropriate parliamentary mechanism for addressing electoral reform.
The Chief Observer of the 2002 EU Election Observation Mission, Mr. John Cushnahan, was a special presenter at the event.
